'Black Tie' is the dress code for semi formal evening events, from private & public dinners, dances & parties. The jacket and matching trousers are known as a 'Tuxedo' in America / Canada but here in Europe the jacket is known as the smoking jacket.

The black silk bow and the short black jacket are of military origin. 'Black Tie' leaves much to the wearers discretion with more modern influences from America but British gentlemen would still consider only the traditional to be 'Black Tie'.

Until the 1800s the only accepted form of evening wear was what is known as 'White Tie'. This consists of a Tailcoat with satin facing lapels, worn with a marcella waistcoat and a white bow tie.

Traditionally there are only two styles of lapel; the shawl collar which derives from the smoking jacket and the notch lapel comes from the evening tails. Both jackets are made in single or double breasted.White Tuxedo jackets are considered a correct form of evening dress when in a warm climate. Ideal for that cruise!

A 'Cummerbund' derives again from military dress. It is a satin band worn around the waist with a single breasted jacket with the pleats facing upwards. The evening trousers should have one ribbon or satin stripe down the edge of the trouser.
